In 2014, over one billion Yahoo accounts were hacked. Everything from names, email address, phones, passwords, valuable information and so much more was compromised. And theses invaluable information were used to perpetrate every kind of cyber-crime you can think of; identity theft, phishing, Email bombing and spamming, etc. Now there is a good chance that your Yahoo account was one of those hacked. In this piece, am going to show you the tell-tale signs that your account has been hacked and what you should do to restore your yahoomail account.

Signs Your Yahoomail Account Has Been Hacked

You are not receiving any emails.

If the last time you received any email/notifications were months ago, its most like your yahoo account has been hacked. To be sure your account is safe, tell a friend to send an email to you. If you do not receive it, your account may have been compromised.

Your YahooMail account is sending spam to your friends and contacts.

Go through your “sent messages” if you notice that your yahoo account has been used to send unsolicited emails to the people on your contact list, then it is most likely that your account has been hacked.

Your account settings were changed without your knowledge.

If you go through your yahoo account settings and find out that your basic information has been changed, you have been hacked.

Here is what to do if you notice your email account has been hacked:

Check your email account for valuables

Since we all have tons of sensitive information in our email accounts, I would advise that the first thing you do when you notice that your yahoo account has been compromised is to search and delete all sensitive information like credit card details, exposed passwords and all important information from your email account.

Change Your Yahoo Password

Go to your account settings and change your password. Use strong, unique passwords. To learn how to change your Yahoo mail password read our article here: How to Change Your Yahoo Password

Check Your Yahoo Recovery Email Address

In the Account security section of your account, you will see a section that contains your account recovery details. This includes an email address or password that can be used to verify your account if for some reason you get locked out.

If you do not have one, you should add one now! Add an email address and phone number that you can access any time of the day. By doing this, whenever you are locked out of your email account, you can recover the account by accessing the information that was sent to your recovery email address of phone number listed.

If you had already listed your recovery information in your account security section, check to make sure that they are accurate. Hackers can change your email address or phone number to the one they control. So check these details to make sure they are accurate.

Use the Yahoo Two-Step Verification

The two-step verification is a reliable way to keep out hackers. In this process, you are required to enter a verification pin that will be sent to the cell phone number you provided upon activation before you are able to log into your yahoo account. The only way this method can be beaten is if the hacker that accessed your account stole your mobile phone as well. This is usually a rare situation.

To use the two-step verification, go to your account security section. Towards the bottom of the page, you will see the two-step verification with a switch to turn it on or off. Turn it on and complete the process.

Check Your Other Accounts

Its common knowledge that the best of us use the same password on multiple accounts. And hackers know this. So when they hack into one account, they will use the same password and apply to all the other accounts you have on the internet. So change all the passwords to all of your other web accounts.

Get a Good Antivirus

Another smart way of kicking out hackers is by using a reliable antivirus software frequently. This ensures that your system is free from every virus that must be running in on your system.

This should work for you. But if they don’t, you can use our comment area below to let us know what challenges you are facing. Cheers
